Waldron Shale Trilobite Maurotarion christyi in Ventral Mode

Name: Maurotarion christyi

Trilobites, Order Proetida, Superfamily Aulacopleuroidea, Family Aulacopleuriidae

Geologic Time: Silurian

Size: 17 mm

Fossil Site: Waldron Shale Formation, Shelby County, Indiana

This plate displays a fine specimen of a trilobite only rarely seen known as Maurotarion chrisyi. This is in ventral position, showing the hypostome (anchor for mouthparts) as well as the cephalic and pygidial doublures. The raised eyes typical of the genus can also be seen from below in this meticulously-prepared specimen. While there has been slight displacement of the pygidium, the dramtically-elongated genal spines are complete and tightly attached, making for a wonderful example of this unusual taxon.
