Gerospina schachti Trilobite

Gerospina schachti trilobite

Class Trilobita, Trilobite Order Ptychopariida, Family uncertain

Geological Time: Upper Middle Cambrian

Size: 39 mm with axial spine

Fossil Site: Weeks Formation, Millard County, Utah

Gerospina This trilobite is a recently-described genus which had previously been assigned to Cedaria based upon incomplete specimens. As a consequence newer, more complete material led to a rediscription in a dissertation in 2003, where the current name was used. We do not have access to the pertinent literature reference to know if it was assigned to the same Family as Cedaria (Cedariidae) or some other trilobite family. Gerospina has many similarities to another rare trilobite, Norwoodia bellaspina (Ptychopariida, Norwodiidae), but that may be more a result of evolutionary convergence than anything else. Whatever its affinities, it is a most rare trilobite, seen here in pristine condition with no restoration.
